Between passing out, nursing a plane without wings, and landing at a hot base. I got 4 kills from bringing this girl home. Wow, what punishment she took.

Musta came in extremely hot on approach... What's the sink rate on that bird? Man, what a pilot...
Jeebus..
Whenever I'm just missing one of those wingtip parts on a fighter, I inevitably circular - barrel roll to my death despite inputting lots of rudder.
Is it possible to land missing only 1 wingtip in a fighter? _________________ To fly or not to fly, that is the question

Wow! Thanks guys.
Golden: I don't recall the sink rate, but with all 4 engines going full out I could maintain a slight positive climb. So my altitude was adjusted by speed. As for holding a plane missing a wingtip. You have to be fast on the rudder to compensate. Once she rolls, thats it. But if you can catch her, and hold her near level. She'll be fine. (Well, you're still missing a wing. RTB dummy)
Hornet: Lol, funny you should ask... My car is up on Telephone poles. I'm doing brake work and some interior work atm. So... the B-17 looks better.
Tarstar: Wow, thank you sir. I just.. I
Tunes: Jeebus a medal? I dont know what to say. Although, I did notice not a single gunner is wounded. Just me. So I brought all 9 of my men home safe. My wound wasn't much. Just a scratch really. The blacking out made holding her level a real test of "how long can you hold still" Stareing at a black screen and just freezing, hoping you dont move your stick in any wrong way.
The landing, having an elevator, was just a matter of getting to gear drop speed without nosing over too much, then pulling on the stick seconds before the tires hit. Having rudder also helped. As I could slightly turn using it. The real bear was just keeping her level without wings/ailerons. As both wings were equal (equally missing) any flight adjustment needed to be tiny to avoid roll over. Which seemed to want to happen at any angle past 2 degree's
The hardest part was the one not many would think about. Fighting off the last con who took my wing. I was already down 1 tip, but that con was dead. A new 190 was hot on me, and I knew I needed to gun. Holding rudder in a gunner, while shooting. That was the toughest part. Thought I was toast. I SHOULD of been toast. But I got him, and he only got my tip. The rest my friends, was just getting the poor girl home.

Tarstar,
Thanks for reminding me about that video!
I had let it slip right past me when I was
cataloging the Film Locker.
I have just placed that video on our home
page as our Featured Video!
Thank you again!

I've landed missing a wingtip many times in a fighter... here are the tricks:
1> Catch it fast! Opposite rudder, full trim. Once you're part 90-100 degrees it's game over! Once you have some resemblance of control, use SMOOTH and GENTLE motions.
2> SPEED SPEED SPEED! If you're close to stall speed when it happens, you're not likely to recover. The faster you are, the more stable the plane will be.
3> Burn the fuel in the broken wing if you can.
4> You should be able to maintain level flight (albeit with a lot of work), and actually climb a bit on your way RTB. Do exactly that! Get as high as you can because a mistake at 8000 feet is a lot less deadly than a mistake at 800 feet. You're also going to lose control during slowdown so you want room for error.
5> When you're getting close to your base and are at a comfortable altitude, slowly throttle back to idle. Don't worry about losing altitude just concentrate on keeping the wings level and slowing down. Once you get slow enough you can drop your flaps (hopefully those aren't damaged) and fly reasonably well enough to land.
6> Maintain 130-140 mph and slowly descend. You'll be a bit hot on landing, but any slower and you can lose it. Usually I can get slow enough over the tarmac that my plane will stall out on the broken side and that gear will touch down first. Then I bounce a bit and settle down on the rest of the gear and I'm good to go.
7> Do NOT try to belly land this kind of landing (unless your gear is broken too) as you're likely going to swerve off the runway in the process. Once you're down on all of your gear, you can turn back onto the runway and get your successful landing.
Enjoy! _________________ LCA = LET'S CREATE ANARCHY!
