So I took the plunge and purchased the DCS A10C (they were having a 70% off sale the other day!!).

I had held off in the past simply because the A10 is so insanely complex I knew I didn't have the time to learn. The good news is that there are some great training missions to help the learning curve and countless youtube videos to help.

I was on AH the other night and PD37 said he wanted to see a video so here it is.

I didn't do any editing to this video and it's kinda raw and long. I had put together a very simple training mission to practice putting missiles and bombs on target. They don't shoot back much. I tend to die quickly on any of the prebuilt missions in DCS World, usually by a Sam or 3 Smile

Enjoy!

Cool! Big learning curve...I can't imagine what it takes to design a sim so complex.

HUGE learning curve! The aircraft is just a small piece of the complexity. I'm trying to put together another similar video with a mission I've created with f-18's coming in to knock out the SAM and a JTAC to help guide me onto targets.

DCS world accepts all sorts of variations for mission and campaign setups including special coding script that can make crazy things happen. They have some missions that come with the A10 that have lots of intricacies and dialogues.

All this and I've still not touched the multi-player stuff...

I was wondering if there was a multi-player for that thing. Do they have a damage model so you can shoot down others and stuff?

Climber where did you find the 70% off sale?

The sale was going on earlier this month. I got Combined Arms for $5. Combined Arms is a way to control vehicles and troops on the ground while still having the capability of flying.

The multi-player version comes with DCS world (the world the modules work in) and is free. You can download DCS for free at the Eagle Dynamics website and it comes with the SU25t and TF-51 (2 seat pony). You can check out the dynamics a bit for free this way. I've flown the 51 a bit and it flies nice but the SU25 is funky since the cockpit is all in Russian. I did just get a new fix that changes the cockpit to English. But I still haven't gotten it in the air.

Oh and for multi-player you would need to operate from team speak. I'm not sure how somebody goes about hosting a server either. I need to post on the forums to find a group to fly with and check things out.

I think anyone can host a TeamSpeak server as long as their cpu is left on. I remember we used to do it in aces high quite a bit so we could run missions without channel vox bothering everyone else, but still listen to it. I'd be interested in trying it out. Do the Ponies have weapons?

I just downloaded it and flew the TF-51D. Took me three tries to get it off the runway without banging prop. One time rolled over and caught on fire! Third time I got off and landed perfectly. NEED track IR and a good throttle/stick/rudder pedal combo if you gonna be serious about this game. Unless you have four hands and six eyes.

Shocked

Man I'd really like to play this game seriously. My Logitech Xtreme 3d Pro throttle won't work with it for some reason. My issue is that I have to use my right hand on the stick, and the prop RPM lever is hidden behind the throttle on the left of cockpit. So I have to switch hands quickly and use the mouse to adjust throttle , then RPM. Makes, take-off and landing very difficult. Not to mention, I can't see the dang gauges clearly enough without zooming in and then using the hat-switch to look around cockpit. By that time, I'm off course and upside down....

I don't want to spend a bunch of money. Can I get just a throttle/prop control to hook -in with my 3D Pro?

You shouldn't be needing that many RPM changes. With the pony I take off at full (3000 if I remember) then back it off to 2700 once established with your climb. If you will be going any distance you can bring it back a good bit. For combat I'd leave it at 2700 unless you're near the supercharger limit and need some help and don't mind beating up the engine.

The manual says to run the MP and RPM up prior to landing for 1 minute to clear the engine then back to 2700 for landing. In a sim I skip this and just go to 2700 when I get in the pattern. The pony doesn't slow down like in AH so a combat break is mandatory (even watched a YouTube video of a real pilot saying the pony needs this to slow). Just be thankful the pony doesn't require mixture settings.

Don't get a joystick quadrant. Keep the throttle on your stick and map the flaps and gear to it. Find your keys for the RPM or use the mouse to click. That's how I work the piston engines in DCS as well as FSX.
For a combat sim you should be only making that RPM reduction after takeoff and none others.

Here's a joystick option for you. Check on ebay for a saitek x45. You could probably find a used one still in good shape for about $45. It's what I use and I've got all the hotas features mapped to it for the A-10 (it's cramped and a bit confusing but works).

It is easily programmed and gives you a durable inexpensive upgrade into a separate joystick and throttle combo.

If you pick one up I can send you my profiles (I've got one for AH, DCS (general stuff and the Saber), the DCS warthog, and FSX.

One other thing you may try. I think DCS gives an option for mapping a shift button to your joystick. This may allow you to use a button as a shift and whole pushing it adjust the RPM with the throttle slider. Worth checking out...
